Two lawmakers in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing ill-treatment during the party’s recent primaries.

Speaker Danladi Jatau announced the defection of Mohammed Omadefu (Keana) and Jacob Kudu (Nasarawa Eggon East) on Tuesday in Lafia, after reading their resignation letters during plenary.

“Some of us have accepted the outcome of the APC primaries in good faith. While some of you did not and felt that you had a platform where you would excel. So, I wish you the best of luck in your new platform,” Mr Jatau said.

In a related development, the House passed for second reading a bill to amend the Nasarawa State Education Trust Fund Law, 2025. The bill’s sponsor, Abel Bala (PDP-Nasarawa Eggon West), argued that the amendment would generate additional revenue, create jobs, and raise educational standards across the state.

Contributing to the debate, Luka Zhekaba, Musa Abubakar, Solomon Akwashiki, and Larry Ven-Bawa supported the bill, describing it as a tool to tackle unemployment and improve living standards.

However, Deputy Speaker Mohammed Oyanki cautioned against proceeding with the amendment, urging the House to first resolve the leadership crisis plaguing the Education Trust Fund. “It is better for the House to liaise with the executive in order to find a solution to the leadership problem,” he advised.

The Speaker subsequently referred the bill to the House Committee on Education, mandating them to report back by July 28.
