The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara Command, has arrested a 21-year-old suspect, Soliu Mujeeb, over the alleged kidnapping, abduction, and culpable homicide of his employer, 60-year-old Olarewaju Afolabi.

NSCDC Kwara commandant, Abbas Nda-Muhammed, disclosed this to journalists on Sunday in Ilorin. He said the case was reported at the command’s Tracking Unit on June 11, after Mr Afolabi was declared missing.

The victim had left his residence on June 7 to inspect an electrical wiring site but did not return. His family later received a ransom demand of N2 million through Mr Afolabi’s phone. The family could only raise N120,000, which was paid as directed. The caller promised to release the victim after receiving the money.

Through investigation and financial analysis of funds paid into the victim’s Opay account, operatives traced the suspect. Interrogation revealed that Mr Mujeeb worked with Mr Afolabi as a ‘joinman’ (assistant) in electrical installation services.

The commandant stated: “The suspect confessed that there was a disagreement between him and the victim over missing material. The victim forced him to pay for it in instalments. The suspect became angry after deductions started from his salary.”

Mr Nda-Muhammed alleged that the suspect lured Mr Afolabi to an uncompleted building in Anuoluwapo Community, Kangile, Ilorin East, under the guise of inspecting a new electrical project. He then attacked and killed the victim, took his phone and SIM card, and used them to demand ransom.

The suspect later led operatives to the scene, where a shallow grave containing Mr Afolabi’s remains, his mobile phone, and SIM card was discovered.

The commandant assured residents that the NSCDC remains committed to protecting life and property, working with other agencies to rid Kwara of criminals. He urged the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies, emphasising that cooperation is essential in tackling criminal activities across the state. (NAN)
