The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reaffirmed its commitment to food safety during the 2026 Hajj, declaring that the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remains non-negotiable.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commission disclosed that Saudi health authorities are rigorously enforcing food safety standards in response to the Kingdom’s prevailing weather conditions. However, on the night of 27th May 2026, certain dinner meals failed to meet required handling and packaging protocols.

Working alongside Saudi health officials, NAHCON said the affected meals were rejected immediately. A service support company subsequently provided alternative light refreshments to the pilgrims involved.

Members of the NAHCON Board later visited the affected pilgrims and briefed state officials on the incident.

The Commission’s Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has directed the Security Committee to investigate the caterers responsible. He also ordered a probe into individuals linked to the award of the affected contracts.

In a related development, Ambassador Yusuf instructed the Central Security Committee to investigate tour operators suspected of bringing in more pilgrims than officially registered. The Commission said some operators were exploiting innocent pilgrims by exceeding approved quotas.

NAHCON warned that any operator found guilty would face sanctions, including the withdrawal of their operating licences.

The Commission also confirmed that arrangements are underway for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the substandard meals. It expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by those impacted.

NAHCON reassured all Nigerian pilgrims of its unwavering commitment to their welfare and safety throughout the Hajj exercise, adding that it would continue to collaborate closely with Saudi authorities to ensure full compliance with health and safety standards.
