The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has begun distributing teaching and learning materials to public primary and junior secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in partnership with the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB).

Speaking at the launch on Thursday in Abuja, UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to quality education, describing it as the foundation of national development. She said the commission remains dedicated to ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every Nigerian child.

The distribution is part of a nationwide UBEC intervention to improve teaching and learning outcomes in public schools. Ms Garba noted that the initiative reflects sustained collaboration between UBEC and state boards to enhance infrastructure, teacher capacity, and access to learning resources.

“This initiative seeks to ensure that every Nigerian child receives quality education,” she said. “It is also to empower them with materials to improve learning outcomes, enhance classroom experience, and enable them to compete globally.”

Ms Garba disclosed that under UBEC interventions, more than 10,000 classrooms have recently been built nationwide. Over 500 teachers have benefited from capacity-building programmes, while more than 400,000 teaching and learning materials and over seven million core textbooks have been distributed to students.

She also revealed that, working with grassroots partners, the commission has helped reintegrate 700,000 out-of-school children into education – describing the figure as a major milestone.

“Today’s event continues the nationwide effort reinforced by President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places the Nigerian child at the centre,” she added.

More than 100,000 Quranic learning materials have also been distributed, targeting out-of-school children, particularly those in Tsangaya Islamic education systems.

The FCT received over 137 core textbooks, more than 7,000 packs of pencils and exercise books, over 40 interactive smart boards, 30 desktop computers, school bags, shoes, and other instructional materials.

Earlier, FCT Education Secretariat Mandate Secretary Danlami Hayyo said FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is delivering on Mr Tinubu’s agenda, noting that the rehabilitation and renovation of 108 schools had been awarded, with a significant number completed.

Acting Executive Chairman of FCT UBEB, Florence Wenegieme, said the distribution would strengthen teaching and learning in public schools. “To our teachers, students, and pupils, this initiative is for you,” she said, urging effective use of the materials.

The Emir of Jiwa, Idris Musa, commended UBEC and warned against diversion of the supplies.
