The beneficiaries, who spoke during the distribution exercise on Tuesday, said the intervention would help cushion the effects of the high cost of farm inputs and improve food security across the state.

The Village Head of Zonkwa, Mr. Haruna Dangiwa, noted that the gesture came at a time when many farmers were struggling to afford fertilizer due to the prevailing economic hardship.

“This is the first time in a long while that we are receiving this kind of support directly from the state government without any cost. It will go a long way in improving our yields this farming season,” Nyam said.

Another beneficiaries, James Yunana from Madakiya and Murna Bartholomew from Ikulu Ward described the distribution as “a lifeline” for smallholder farmers. he called on the government to sustain the programme annually to ensure consistent agricultural development.

The Executive Chairman of Zango-Kataf Local Government, Engr. Bege Joseph Gaiya, who supervised the distribution, said the gesture was in line with Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to supporting rural farmers and strengthening food supply chains.

He explained that the fertilizers were allocated to all wards in the council area to ensure equitable distribution and prevent diversion.

“Our farmers are the backbone of our economy, and the governor understands that supporting them directly means boosting food security and livelihoods. We will ensure that every genuine farmer benefits from this initiative,” Gaiya stated.

The Chairman further urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the fertilizer to maximize their harvest and contribute to the local economy.

Agricultural experts have consistently identified timely access to farm inputs as a key factor in improving yields and reducing post-harvest losses.

With the current intervention, many farmers in Zango-Kataf are optimistic about a better harvest despite the economic challenges facing the country.
