A civic group in Zamfara State has criticised Governor Dauda Lawal’s decision to host Nigerian chess champion Tunde Onakoya, arguing the event was poorly timed given the state’s worsening security and economic situation.

The group, Zamfara for Good Governance, issued a statement on Wednesday, led by its chairman Hon Ismail Muhammad Gudau, describing the governor’s action as “insensitive” in light of recent violence in the state.

The group pointed to recent attacks in Shinkafi, Kaura Namoda, and the Zoma community in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where dozens were reportedly killed, homes destroyed, and women and children abducted by armed groups.

He said despite huge allocation from the federal government still, Zamfara citizens are going to bed in hunger and poverty has become the issue of the day.The only thing he cares for is how to appears on television and lied to public about his failed administration

They noted that while communities are reeling from loss and fear, the governor has yet to visit affected areas or offer public condolences, sparking widespread frustration among residents.

“Leadership must reflect the urgency of the moment,” the group stated. “Engagements such as this should not come at the expense of empathy and immediate action.”

Governor Lawal, who came into office promising to prioritise security, has faced criticism from residents who now feel those commitments have yet to materialise.

The group urged the state government to refocus efforts on relief, security coordination, and outreach to affected communities, stressing the need for urgent action to rebuild public trust.
