We must remain vigilant against regional, global threats – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has charged the participants of the National Defence College (NDC) Course 32,  to be vigilant and proactive in addressing the myriad of regional and global threats.

Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made the call at the graduation of the participants on Friday in Abuja.

He said the college had adequately equipped the participants with the requisite knowledge and strategies and charged them to rise to the occasion in addressing the prevailing national security challenges.

“We must remain vigilant and proactive in addressing regional and global threats as we progress.

“We must also continue to promote democratic values and uphold democratic principles in our country and across the continent.

“As the current chair of ECOWAS, we will do all necessary to strengthen ties and resolve present negations within the community,’’ he said.

The president commended the college for sustaining excellence, courage, patriotism and integrity, pledging to ensure adequate support for the institution to move to its permanent site as soon as possible.

He also acknowledged the exceptional service and dedication of members of the armed forces in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens.

He pledged the commitment of his administration to address all the prevailing security, social and economic challenges confronting the country.

“I will continue to do everything within my constitutional powers to ensure that the Nigerian military is well-resourced and capable.

“As a government, we are sensitive to our people’s challenges and we will continue to actively intervene in matters that can affect our citizens.

“Recently, we have made significant strides in addressing some of these challenges.

“We have implemented a new national minimum wage, which will benefit not only civilian workers but also personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies.

“We are also working tirelessly to counter the menace of the crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta.”

According to him, this will lead to increase in our oil production and achieve our desired economic standards.

“We are committed to creating an enabling business environment that encourages value addition in our mining sector.

“We are working with international partners to develop a strategy that will harness this sector’s potential for national security,’’ he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the college graduated a total of 111 participants drawn from the armed forces of Nigeria and those of other 19 friendly nations.

Northern Elders issues 14-day ultimatum over Edo mob attack

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), on Saturday, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Edo State Government and the Federal Government following the brutal mob attack that led to the killing of innocent Northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State.

The victims were reportedly returning home to celebrate the end of Ramadan and Eid Kabir with their families when they were attacked.

NEF spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, in a statement, condemned the killings as “barbaric, extra-judicial, and cowardly,” calling for urgent action to address the situation.

He said: “The North has tolerated numerous such animalistic and cannibalistic acts of recklessness from some Southern part of Nigeria in the past. This must come to an end.

“The North will take stringent action in response to this inhumane attack on its peace-loving people. Consequently, the NEF hereby demands the following immediate actions from the authorities in Edo State and the Federal Government.

“The swift recovery of the bodies of the victims and their dignified transfer to their families for an honorable and befitting burial in accordance with their respective faiths. The arrest and trial of all individuals responsible for the attack and the brutal killings of the innocent travellers.”

The forum also demands a public prosecution of the perpetrators and those that aided the crime to ensure full transparency and accountability.

He add, “The due payment of compensation to the families of the victims, in line with the prescribed standards of their respective faiths. An unreserved apology from the people and authorities of Edo State, with a commitment to ensuring that such barbaric behavior never occurs again.

“An unreserved apology from the Edo State Government to the North for this heinous attack on its people. The punishment of the perpetrators must be witnessed by the public to serve as a deterrent to any such future acts of violence.

“The NEF demands that the Edo State Government and the Federal Government take concrete and visible steps to fulfill these demands within fourteen (14) days from the date of this release. Failure to do so will compel the North to take all necessary actions to seek justice for her people and the North.

“The Federal Government must ensure that justice is served to the victims and their families to preserve peace, stability, and the peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians.”

The NEF urged Northern communities to remain calm and patient while it pursues the matter through the appropriate government agencies.

He used the opportunity to extend the gratitude of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited to Nigeria’s President on his special day , particularly in curbing the country’s crude oil theft and increasing daily production from a low ebb of 600,000 barrels per day to 1.8M barrels in recent times .

He listed the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu just two years in the office which included doubling Nigeria’s aggregate revenue to 9.1 trillion, reduction in revenue on debt servicing from 97% to 68% and payment of $5M in outstanding foreign exchange obligations.
