TJAMS kicks over conduct of Bauchi health, education commissioners

Published

on

The Toro Joint Action for Moral Sanity (TJAMS), on Wednesday, expressed deep concern and disappointment over the conduct exhibited by the Bauchi State Commissioners of Health and Education at a recent party in  Dass Local Government Area.

TJAMS, a community-based organization that aims to uphold moral values and promote ethical behavior, said that during the event, the commissioners, Dr Jamila Dahiru of Education and Dr Adamu Sambo of Health, were witnessed spraying money as they danced in close proximity to each other.

The group in a statement by its chairperson, Hajiya Ladi Danlami, questioned the choice of the commissioners, who belong to local governments, to spend their time and resources in such a frivolous manner.

The group said that both officials, who should be focused on empowering their constituents at home and fulfilling their primary responsibilities to the community, decided to engage in lavish spending at a party elsewhere.

Highlighting the specific concerns surrounding Dr Dahiru, the TJAMS noted that as a married woman and mother, she should have displayed a high level of moral uprightness, particularly in her role as the Commissioner of Education.

Danlami said: “It is expected that she would promote moral values in schools, especially among young girls, visit informal schools such as Islamiya to encourage the students, support exceptional and talented students, and serve as a role model.

“The TJAMS expressed distress at the fact that instead of fulfilling these important responsibilities, Dr Jamila was seen spraying money that would have been better utilized to support her immediate constituency, which is in dire need of assistance.”

In light of these events, the TJAMS called on the Ulama, who are regarded as guardians of morality, to examine the actions of the two commissioners.

He added, “The organization strongly believes that the Ulama should play a crucial role in addressing and rectifying any moral transgressions exhibited by individuals holding positions of authority.

“Additionally, the TJAMS advised Dr Jamila’s husband to take appropriate steps to restore the moral standing of their family. It is essential for families of public officials to maintain a strong moral image, as they are seen as representatives of the community.”

The TJAMS also raised concerns about the appointment of individuals to sensitive positions who might not be able to uphold their oath of office as public servants, arguing that such individuals should resign from their positions if they cannot fulfill their responsibilities.

Furthermore, the group urged the state Governor not to appoint such individuals again, given his own background and religious values.

“The TJAMS is committed to advocating for moral values within the community and holding public officials accountable for their actions. The organization hopes that this incident serves as a catalyst for reflection and change, reinforcing the importance of ethical conduct among those in positions of power, ” the statement added.

Senate President Asked Me For ‘Special Moments’ – Natasha Akpoti

Published

The senator, who represents Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio made an inappropriate request for her to spend “special moments” at his residence.

Natasha Akpoti, made the claim during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Friday.

Her comments follow a recent confrontation with Akpabio over a seating arrangement dispute in the Senate, which led to her being referred to the chamber’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

The controversy began last week when Akpoti-Uduaghan challenged the Senate President over the relocation of her seat in the chamber.

The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, prompting Akpabio to call on Senate security to remove her. Intervention from fellow lawmakers prevented the situation from deteriorating further.

Speaking on Arise TV, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed her dispute with Akpabio dates back to December 2023 when she and her husband visited Akwa Ibom to celebrate the Senate President’s birthday.

She recounted: “Akpabio was showing me around his house and was holding my hands, with my husband following behind us, when he said he wants me to come and be spending special moments in his house.”

She further revealed that her husband overheard the remark and later advised her not to travel abroad alone or be in the company of the Senate President unaccompanied.

In response to the seating dispute, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behaviour, stating that the Senate is “not for entertainment.”

Tariff increase will guarantee quality telecom services – Minister

Published

on

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has said the 50 per cent tariff increase for telecom companies will guarantee meaningful access to telecoms services for Nigerians.

The minister said this while briefing State House Correspondents on Thursday.

The minister had led Mr Sunil Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Airtel and other members of the executive of the company, to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tijani said the decision to increase telecoms tariff was difficult.

He, however, said that it was the responsibility of the government to look out for the interest of citizens, individuals and businesses.

“We have to ensure that when they invest, we can keep them afloat.

” This is a sector that employs close to half a million people in this country, including the value chain.

“Also, it was quite a difficult decision, balancing the need to allow these businesses to be sustainable, to stay afloat, but at the same time ensuring that each and every citizen can have access to telecommunication services,” said Tijani.

He stated that the Federal Government engaged KPMG to conduct a study to determine the optimal tariff allowance which led to the 50 per cent increase.

“If we chose not to allow the increase in tariff, we also were at risk of losing jobs, and some of the companies packing up.

“When you weigh that, it’s also not the best thing for the economy.

” The priority for this government is actually meaningful access.

“We don’t want our people to just have access to telecommunication services.

” We want it to be meaningful; the quality that you get is extremely important,” the minister said.

He said the Federal Government had invested in 90,000 kilometres of fiber to ensure the entire country was covered.

The minister added that the Federal Executive Council had also approved investment in additional 7,000 telecoms towers in rural areas.

He said quality access and connectivity required significant investment.

The minister added that the Federal Government must encourage the private sector to continue to make such investment.

Mittal, on his part, said Nigeria was the soul of Barthi Airtel’s operations in Africa, with the potential to match India’s advancements in digital innovation, connectivity and financial inclusion.

He said Airtel’s success in Nigeria was crucial to its overall success in Africa.

Mittal said Nigeria’s strategic importance underscored Airtel’s objective of driving growth and transformation across the African continent.

“Nigeria is the most important part of our Africa strategy.

” In fact, the entire Africa rests on the back of Nigeria for Airtel,” he said. (NAN)
