In a significant development for Nigeria’s law enforcement, President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP). The ceremony, held at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja, marks a pivotal moment as the nation seeks to enhance its police operations amid growing public scrutiny.

The swearing-in took place at precisely 2:53 PM, following a formal reading of Disu’s citation by Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House. The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, various cabinet members, and high-ranking officials from the Nigeria Police Force.

President Tinubu arrived at the Council Chambers shortly before the ceremony, where the National Anthem was performed. This was followed by the presentation of citations for newly appointed officials, including members of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

Disu’s Endorsement and Background

Disu’s confirmation as IGP follows a unanimous endorsement from the Nigeria Police Council, solidifying his position as a leader within the force. The ceremony was held just before the Federal Executive Council meeting commenced at 3:01 PM, signifying the importance of this appointment within the broader context of the government’s agenda.

The newly appointed commissioners of the RMAFC include individuals from various states, such as Abubakar Wamakko from Sokoto and Sen. Marafa Abba from Taraba, among others. The FCSC officials include prominent figures like Prof. Ngbea Gabriel from Benue and Omoregie Idahagbon from Edo.

Olatunji Disu’s ascent to the role of IGP comes at a critical juncture, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun on February 23, 2026. Although Egbetokun cited “family issues” in his resignation letter, reports suggest that his departure was prompted by a clash with the President over directives related to police duties and state policing.

Commendations from Leaders

Disu received accolades from various state leaders during the Police Council meeting prior to his swearing-in. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu for his exemplary service as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he was recognised for notable achievements in crime control.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule echoed these sentiments, highlighting Disu’s impressive career history, while FCT Minister Nyesom Wike lauded his professionalism and previous contributions to law enforcement in Rivers State. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also voiced support, seconding the motion to endorse Disu’s appointment.

A Vision for the Future

At 59 years of age, Olatunji Disu brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1992. He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship. Prior to his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, overseeing the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos.

During the ceremony, President Tinubu urged Disu to transform the Nigeria Police Force, emphasising the need for improved discipline, inter-agency collaboration, and the restoration of public confidence. Disu responded with a firm commitment to combatting impunity within the force and enforcing a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and human rights abuses.

Conclusion

As Olatunji Disu steps into his role as Inspector-General of Police, the expectations are high. His appointment not only reflects the government’s commitment to reforming law enforcement but also signals a renewed focus on accountability and public trust. With a strong background and a clear mandate, Disu faces the crucial task of steering the Nigeria Police Force into a new era of professionalism and integrity.

This pivotal moment in Nigeria’s law enforcement landscape will be closely monitored as Disu embarks on his mission to enhance the efficacy of the police force and address the pressing issues facing the nation.
