In a significant step towards fostering stability in Taraba State, the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management has unveiled a comprehensive five-year strategic plan. The document was officially presented to Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo on Thursday.

Chairman Bishop Innocent Solomon led the presentation, emphasising that the strategic plan is designed with proactive measures aimed at conflict prevention and resolution throughout the state. He articulated that the plan is grounded in a clearly defined vision, mission, and set of goals, complemented by pragmatic approaches to achieving sustainable peace.

“This document represents the culmination of extensive engagements with key stakeholders across Taraba,” Bishop Solomon stated. “It reflects the collective aspirations of our people for enduring peace and stability.”

The strategic plan emerges in the context of ongoing efforts to address conflict in the region and aligns with the Bureau’s mission to cultivate an environment conducive to peace. Bishop Solomon underscored the necessity of such a plan, especially given the historical challenges the state has faced in terms of conflict and unrest.

During the presentation, Bishop Solomon also shared the successes achieved by the Bureau within its inaugural year. Notable milestones included the organisation of peace-building workshops, a study visit to Plateau State to learn about effective conflict management strategies, training sessions for dialogue facilitators, and capacity-building workshops for journalists focused on peace reporting. These initiatives have laid a solid foundation for the Bureau’s future activities and have engaged communities in the peace process.

In a bid to enhance the Bureau’s operational capacity, Bishop Solomon appealed to Governor Kefas for logistical support, specifically requesting a Hilux van and a bus. “These vehicles are vital for improving our mobility and ensuring we can effectively carry out our mandate throughout the state,” he explained.

Governor Kefas responded positively to the Bureau’s initiatives, expressing his admiration for their proactive stance on peacebuilding. He assured Bishop Solomon that all requests would be considered favourably to facilitate the Bureau’s operations.

“I am pleased with the activities of the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management,” stated Governor Kefas. “Under my administration, there will be no tolerance for criminals in Taraba State. We are committed to maintaining a secure environment, and anyone found instigating unrest will face prosecution.”

The Governor further announced plans to establish a Taraba State Peace, Security, and Crisis Accountability Committee. This committee will be responsible for reviewing incidents of crisis and ensuring accountability for those responsible. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance peace and security across Taraba, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to a peaceful coexistence.

The unveiling of the five-year strategic plan signifies a pivotal moment in Taraba’s journey towards lasting peace. With collaborative efforts from the Bureau, the state government, and the community at large, there is a renewed hope for stability in the region.

As the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management continues to implement its strategic initiatives, the support and active participation of all stakeholders will be crucial. The path to peace is often fraught with challenges, but with a well-structured plan in place, Taraba State is poised to make significant strides towards a harmonious future.

In conclusion, the proactive measures outlined in the strategic plan, coupled with the Governor’s commitment to security and accountability, provide a framework for addressing the root causes of conflict in Taraba. This collaborative approach aims not only to mitigate violence but also to foster a culture of peace that resonates with the aspirations of the people of Taraba. The success of this initiative will depend on the collective efforts of the government, the Bureau, and the communities they serve, setting the stage for a brighter, more peaceful future.
