The Taraba State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has honoured Chief Benjamin Bako for his environmental intervention and climate-action efforts in Jalingo, the state capital.
Bako was named Ecosystem Restoration Activist of the Year 2024 in recognition of his contribution to environmental remediation and human development in the state.
The honour was presented by the ministry in collaboration with the Munga Breed Climate Action Foundation.
The award plaque described the recognition as being “in recognition of your immense contributions towards environmental remediation and human development in Taraba State.”
Bako, a Lagos-based indigene of Takum, reportedly relocated temporarily to Jalingo about three years ago following the commencement of Governor Agbu Kefas’ administration.
According to an article by Kolawole Omotosho, Editor of Forest Friends Newspaper, Bako became concerned about the deteriorating vegetation and rising temperatures in Jalingo.
He subsequently embarked on a privately funded greening project aimed at restoring vegetation and improving the city’s environment.
Bako reportedly mobilised earth-moving equipment from Lagos, engaged workers and began restoring vegetation along the median from Roadblock to the Government House Roundabout.
The project was reportedly executed without a government contract.
It was later handed over to the Taraba State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for maintenance and sustainability.
The intervention has also been linked to the state’s broader environmental campaign, including the reported plan to plant two million trees across Taraba.
Bako’s efforts have complemented the activities of the Chairman of Operation KEEP Taraba Clean, Iliya Kefas, as the state intensifies efforts to improve sanitation, greenery and the appearance of its urban centres.
Receiving the award, Bako described the recognition as a call to deepen his commitment to environmental protection and climate action.
He said his commitment extended beyond Taraba to Nigeria as a whole.
Bako’s record in public service has also attracted recognition.
As Executive Chairman of Takum Local Government Council, he has overseen projects including the construction of a modern market and abattoir, among other infrastructure initiatives.
His administration has also received commendations from organisations, including the Rotary Club.
The latest honour adds to the recognition of Bako’s environmental intervention, particularly his efforts to restore greenery and improve the ecological outlook of Jalingo.
