Tambuwal Steps Aside for Yabo in 2027 Shock Move

In a surprise move that has reshaped opposition political dynamics in Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2027. Instead, the leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cleared the path for Faruk Malami Yabo—a seasoned banker, former finance commissioner, and ex-Nigerian ambassador to Jordan—to contest the Sokoto South Senatorial seat.

At the time of this report, Senator Tambuwal had not responded to requests for further comment. However, party insiders indicate that his decision is both strategic and sacrificial, rooted in a philosophy of political mentorship and generational succession.

A source within the ADC described the move as the pinnacle of political maturity, noting that Tambuwal has never lost an election in six attempts. He served three consecutive terms in the House of Representatives—rising to Speaker during the Seventh Assembly—before stepping aside from his presidential ambition in 2015 to allow the late President Muhammadu Buhari to run. Subsequently, he won the Sokoto governorship in 2015, secured re-election in 2019, and was elected Senator in 2023.

“Tambuwal believes in inclusive, people-centred, and results-oriented leadership,” the source said. “As governor, he created opportunities for women—producing three councillors per ward and appointing three female commissioners—and prioritised youth participation. Stepping aside now demonstrates contentment and respect for the people of Sokoto.”

The Senator has also reportedly ensured that a significant number of ADC’s House of Representatives tickets will go to younger candidates, further affirming his confidence in the next generation of leaders.

Efforts to obtain direct confirmation from Senator Tambuwal were unsuccessful as of filing this report.
