He made the call at the opening of the 2024 Chief of Defence Intelligence Annual Conference in Abuja on Monday, Matawalle emphasized the theme of the conference, “Exploring the Role of Technology in Strengthening National and Regional Security,” and highlighted the need for technological solutions to address the increasingly complex security challenges facing Nigeria.

“Technology offers us both opportunities and challenges,” Matawalle said.

“For any nation’s defence strategy to succeed, it must integrate technology into every facet of its security apparatus. It is crucial that we harness technology as a ‘force multiplier’ to protect our citizens and safeguard our national interests.”

The minister acknowledged the evolving security landscape, noting the growing threats both within Nigeria’s borders and from external sources.

He lauded the efforts of the country’s Defence Attachés, intelligence officers, and diplomats, commending their role in addressing internal and external security threats.

“Intelligence remains vital to our security strategy,” he stated. “It provides the situational awareness needed by both civilian and military leaders to make informed decisions.”

Matawalle also addressed the ethical considerations of using technology, urging Defence Attachés and security officers to uphold international law in their diplomatic engagements.

He stressed that technology should be used strategically and ethically to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and enhance diplomatic relations.
