Shitile Integrity Group (SIG), a social-cultural group representing the Shitile community, strongly condemns the recurring attacks on Harga, a community in Benue State. These attacks have resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives, including the recent incident where 18 defenseless citizens were brutally murdered in July 20th, 2024.
SIG views these targeted attacks as a clear indication of the breakdown of law and order in the Shitile area and urges the government at all levels to prioritize the improvement of security in Shitile and the entire Sankera axis. It is crucial to protect the lives and property of the residents.
In a statement issued by Hon. Ben Ukeji JP, President of SIG, the group expresses outrage at the senseless loss of lives and calls on the government to ensure that the perpetrators face severe legal consequences for their heinous crimes.
“We strongly condemn the barbaric act of slaughtering innocent people within Shitile land. This shameful and inhumane behavior has continued for years, resulting in horrific deaths and the disruption of socioeconomic and educational activities.”
SIG emphasizes that such acts are inhumane, ungodly, and must be stopped immediately. The group also highlights the violation of international protocols and municipal laws, particularly the Geneva Convention of 1949, which protects civilians and civil objects even in times of war.
It is disheartening to witness the waste of innocent lives without adequate measures in place to address this escalating violence. SIG appeals to those responsible for these murderous activities to renounce violence and embrace peaceful means of resolving conflicts for the growth and development of the Shitile nation in both Taraba and Benue States.
The group emphasizes the importance of dialogue in resolving issues and urges the youth to understand this crucial point. SIG commends the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormen Alia, for his efforts to tackle the menace and calls on him to continue his steadfast commitment.
While acknowledging the governor’s initiatives, SIG respectfully requests a comprehensive approach to end these senseless killings and the destruction of lives and property. The group also calls on the traditional institutions in Shitile and the Sankera intermediate area, along with the political class and other stakeholders, to take necessary measures in collaboration to put an end to this tragic narrative.
SIG extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, the Mbacher community, the Shitile nation, and the entire Katina-Ala Local Government Area. May peace be restored to Shitile land through the infinite mercy of the Almighty.”
