Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Mahmoud Gumi has said Nigeria is still searching for great leaders who will prioritise the welfare of citizens over personal wealth accumulation.
Sheikh Gumi made the remarks during an award presentation organised by the Sultan Bello Primary School Old Pupils Association (SUBOPA) in Kaduna. The event honoured two retired military officers, Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin and Brigadier General Abdulkadir Gumi, who recently received government appointments.
Major General Jibrin was appointed Secretary of the Civil Defence, Fire Service, and Immigration Board (CDCFIB) by the Federal Government, while Brigadier General Gumi was named Chairman of the Zamfara State Security Trust Fund Board.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sheikh Gumi praised Major General Jibrin for his dedication and patriotism, describing him as a hardworking and disciplined officer. He stressed the need for Nigeria to have leaders with integrity and a strong commitment to national development.
“This is because Nigeria is searching for great leaders to lead this country,” he said. “We need well-trained and well-mannered people who genuinely want to assist others, not just themselves. People with good qualities and character should be pushed into leadership positions.”
The cleric criticised some current leaders, particularly in northern Nigeria, for prioritising personal and family interests over public service.
Sheikh Gumi also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Zamfara State, which he said had led to poor education and instability in some communities. He commended the Zamfara State Government for appointing Brigadier General Abdulkadir Gumi to the Security Trust Fund Board, urging all Nigerians to contribute to national development.
SUBOPA President Mohammad Babayo Hassan described the appointments of the two retired generals as personal achievements and a reflection of the values and determination instilled in them by their alma mater.
In his remarks, Major General Jibrin, speaking on behalf of the awardees, dedicated the honour to all association members for their recognition and support.
