SDP woos sacked Senate Chief Whip, Ndume

Published

on

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has invited the just removed Majority Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Ali Ndume, to  join its fold.

The National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, extended the invitation at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.

Gabam said that the SDP condemned the removal of Ndume as Chief Whip of the Senate for criticising government, its programmes and policies.

He said that the SDP considered the advice by leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) that Ndume was free to join any opposition party as an act of intolerance.

Ndume representing Borno South (APC-Borno) was on Wednesday removed as the Majority Whip of the Senate and replaced by senator representing Borno North, Sen. Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno).

The decision followed a letter entitled “Complaints Against the Unbecoming Utterances of Sen. Ali Ndume” read by the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Wednesday.

The letter was signed by the APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje and the National Secretary, Sen. Ajibola Basiru.

Gabam said that Ndume’s criticism of the government’s policies and their impact on Nigerians was not only legitimate but also a testament to his commitment to the well-being of the citizens.

He said that instead of replacing Ndume as the Chief  Whip of the Senate, the APC and government should have looked into the genuine issues raised by him and addressed those matters that concerned Nigerians.

“The SDP believes that criticism is essential to a healthy democracy, and we will not stand idly by while the APC seeks to stifle dissenting voices.

“We extend an official invitation to Sen. Ndume to join our party and continue his quest for social justice, good governance, and the entrenchment of democratic principles.

“To Sen. Ndume, we say: your courageous stand against the APC’s authoritarian tendencies is laudable, and we welcome you to our fold.

“Together, we shall continue to advocate for the rights of Nigerians and ensure that our democracy remains vibrant and inclusive,’’ he said.

Gabam said that Ndume was not just a very ranking senator but one of the most experienced parliamentarians in Nigeria today.

He advised APC and the Presidency to embrace criticism, listen to the concerns of Nigerians, and work towards building a more inclusive and participatory democracy.

He said that the removal of Ndume was of grave concern that does not augur well for the Senate and the executive.

He likened it to the suspension of Sen. Abdul Ningi was suspended for raising an issue of alleged padding of the budget.

“Recently, president of the 9th  Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, also raised serious concern and Sen. Adams Oshiomole suffered similar fates for speaking truth to power.

“This trend is alarming and undermines the principles of democracy and fair hearing,” he said.

He advised the ruling party to listen to voices of Nigerians saying “building a democracy is not an individual affair, but a collective responsibility.’’

Gabam also hailed the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the financial autonomy of the local government in the country, describing it as victory for democracy.

While commending the Federal Government for initiating the suit, Gabam appealed to state governors to immediately comply to ensure that the third tier of government was in control of its financial affairs.(NAN

….says don’t allow politics to divide you
..Gov Yusuf Thanks Shettima for condolences

Vice President Kashim Shettima has appealed for peace in Kano and urged the burial of political differences.

Shettima made the call while paying a condolence visit to the family of the Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, who died two weeks ago.

This was contained in a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, on Saturday.

“Please, please, I plead with you not to allow politics to divide you. You should be united,” Vice President Kashim Shettima stated at the deceased’s residence.

“Kano is the heart of the North, and I am from the North,” he added, praying, “May Allah bring unity among us.”

In his welcome address, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, thanked the Vice President on behalf of the government and the people of Kano State for the visit.

“We thank you so much for coming to commiserate with us over the death of our father and grandfather. We pray for Almighty Allah to take you back home safely,” Governor Yusuf was quoted as saying.

A family representative of the late Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Sunusi Abbas, expressed gratitude to the Vice President for the condolence visit and prayed for unity among Kano’s political leaders.

“We keep praying — may the demise of the Galadiman Kano become an avenue for unity among the political leaders in Kano.”

“We saw every representative of the political parties. We are grateful to the Governor, who was here at the funeral and came back to condole us again. Now, he is here with the Vice President — we are grateful.”

Wike: I wanted Fubara’s removal, but Tinubu came in and saved Rivers

Published

on

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers, saying he wanted the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the oil-rich state.

In a move that has continued to divide opinions, Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the House of Assembly following months of political crisis in Rivers State.

But Wike said the president’s move saved Rivers from implosion, arguing that the decision to appoint a sole administrator following Fubara’s suspension was a step in the right direction.

The former Rivers governor said this on Friday in Abuja during a media parley with select journalists.

“As a politician, I am not happy with the declaration of Emergency Rule in Rivers state. I wanted the outright removal of the governor. But for the interest of the state, the president did the right thing to prevent anarchy in the state.” Wike said.

“However, people must tell the truth. The governor was gone. He was gone, yes… so when people say the president did this, I say they should be praising him.

“Every morning, they should go to the president and ask, ‘Can we wash your feet for saving us?’”

“Mr president came in and saved the situation, saved Rivers people from that calamity and anarchy,” the FCT minister argued.

Falana Slams Ibas,Seeks His Removal

Published

on

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to immediately remove the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, citing a breach of constitutional procedure and defiance of President Bola Tinubu’s directives.

In a statement provided to Elanza News on Thursday, Falana referenced the official Federal Government Gazette, which outlined the terms governing the Sole Administrator’s operations.

According to the document, “the Sole Administrator shall operate on the basis of such Regulations that may, from time to time, be issued by me,” President Bola Tinubu stated.

However, Falana noted that “it is common knowledge that President Bola Tinubu has not issued any Regulation for the operation of the Sole Administrator.”

Despite this, the appointed Sole Administrator has proceeded to make appointments and remove officials who were earlier appointed by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Describing the development as unlawful, Falana said: “By treating the orders of President Bola Tinubu with contempt, the Sole Administrator has compounded the illegality of his appointment.

The Sole Administrator ought to be removed without any further delay.”

The legal luminary’s position comes amid a broader political crisis in Rivers State, where the legitimacy of key appointments and the balance of powers between the state and federal government continue to generate intense debate.
