The United Africa Royal Assembly has called for urgent action to address the crisis in Mozambique following contested election results that have plunged the nation into turmoil.

In a statement, HIH Prince Estifanos Matewos, President of the Assembly and Pan-African Parliament Ambassador for Traditional Affairs and Governance, urged dialogue and strategic engagement to bridge the widening rift between Mozambique’s leadership and its citizens.

“The only way forward is through constructive and strategic engagement,” Prince Matewos said.

“Dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to peace and stability are essential to de-escalating tensions and restoring order in Mozambique.”

The call for unity follows the October 9 general elections, where the ruling Frelimo party retained power amid accusations of electoral fraud from opposition groups.

The allegations have sparked widespread protests and violent clashes, resulting in over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands, many of whom have sought refuge in neighboring Malawi.

The crisis has also impacted the economy, with companies like Sasol and Gemfields halting operations due to security concerns.

A prison riot earlier this month in Maputo saw 6,000 inmates, including convicted terrorists, escape, further exacerbating the country’s fragile security situation.

The United Nations and international organizations have appealed for calm and a peaceful resolution, while the African Union and regional leaders face mounting pressure to take decisive action.

Prince Matewos highlighted the need for collective efforts to stabilize the country, saying, “Mozambique has faced adversity before, and we are confident that, through a united effort, we will rise above this challenge once again.”
