A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday gave a judgement restraining the Nigerian Police and other security agencies from arresting the Chief of Staff, Rivers State Government House, Edison Ehie.

The presiding judge, Justice Aila Aprioku, delivered the judgement following a fundamental right suit filed by Ehie against the Nigerian Police.

The matter, which pertained to the fundamental human rights of the applicant, was brought before the court for hearing and determination. Counsel for the applicant, D.O. Okoro, SAN, and C.M. Dickson, Esq., representing the respondents, presented their arguments before the court.

The judgement reads in part: “The dismissal of the preliminary objection raised on the issue of jurisdiction, deemed lacking in merit.

“A declaration restraining the respondents from arresting the applicant based on charges alleged to be politically motivated and aimed at settling scores, specifically referencing the burning and destruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly chambers.

“An injunction preventing the respondents from harassing, intimidating, or detaining the applicant in connection with the aforementioned charges, deemed a gross contravention of the applicant’s right to personal liberty.

“The awarding of costs amounting to One Hundred Thousand Naira (₦100,000) in favor of the applicant against the respondents.”
