Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has received one of the nation’s highest academic recognitions as the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), conferred on her an Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Degree in Education, a distinction widely viewed as a testament to her sustained contributions to education, women empowerment, humanitarian service and national development.

The honour, conferred during the university’s convocation ceremony on Saturday, drew widespread commendation from stakeholders, including the Renewed Hope Neighbour to Neighbour Initiative, which described the award as a fitting recognition for a First Lady whose interventions have touched millions of lives across Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Hon. Belusochukwu Enwere, the group said the honorary doctorate reflects Senator Tinubu’s exceptional leadership, transformative impact in education and unwavering dedication to national development.

“This well-deserved honour is a powerful testament to your remarkable service to humanity and your enduring commitment to building a better future for Nigerians through education, empowerment and compassion,” the statement said.

Since assuming office as First Lady in 2023, Senator Tinubu has positioned the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) as one of Nigeria’s largest social intervention platforms, implementing programmes focused on education, healthcare, agriculture, economic empowerment and social investment in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the Initiative, its programmes have reached more than 40 million households across the country’s 774 local government areas through partnerships with government agencies and development organisations.

Under her leadership, thousands of women have received business grants, vocational training, ICT and digital skills, agricultural support and equipment to strengthen their livelihoods.

The Initiative has also expanded scholarship opportunities for students, promoted maternal and child healthcare, provided relief materials to vulnerable households and persons with disabilities, and supported families affected by disasters and economic hardship.

In the South-East, the First Lady’s interventions have gained significant visibility through empowerment programmes for women and youths, educational support, nutrition and healthcare campaigns, food distribution, and grants for vulnerable groups.

The region has also benefited from initiatives promoting indigenous enterprise, skills acquisition and women’s economic participation under the Renewed Hope Initiative.

Beyond economic empowerment, Senator Tinubu has consistently championed girls’ education and youth development, urging young Nigerians, especially girls, to pursue excellence through education, discipline and innovation.

Her advocacy has also extended to campaigns for family stability, social inclusion and improved opportunities for women as critical pillars of national development.

The honorary doctorate by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is more than a ceremonial recognition. They argue it reflects the growing national acknowledgement of a First Lady whose humanitarian interventions have transcended political boundaries to deliver measurable social impact.

For the Renewed Hope Neighbour to Neighbour Initiative, the award is both a celebration of past accomplishments and an affirmation of Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s expanding legacy as an advocate of education, women empowerment and inclusive development.

It said the honour reinforces her place among Nigeria’s foremost champions of human capital development and social transformation.
