ABUJA- President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, whose term was due to expire on August 31, 2025.

In a statement signed by Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said the extension would enable Adeniyi to “consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives” of the administration.

These include: “The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service” “The implementation of the National Single Window Project”
“The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol”

President Tinubu commended Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the extension would further strengthen the Service in achieving its “strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”

The decision comes as the Nigeria Customs Service undergoes significant reforms aimed at improving efficiency and boosting government revenue.

Adeniyi, a career customs officer, was appointed Comptroller-General in 2023 and has since spearheaded efforts to digitize operations and enhance transparency.

The extension ensures continuity in key projects, including the National Single Window initiative designed to streamline trade processes, and Nigeria’s implementation of AfCFTA commitments to boost intra-African trade.
