The Sokoto State Police Command has launched its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to combat kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence, while rebuilding public trust in law enforcement.

The new unit, which replaces existing tactical formations, reflects ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu. It is designed to deliver swift, intelligence-led, and professional responses to violent crimes across the state.

According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufa’i, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, the initiative marks a strategic shift toward modern, accountable, and community-oriented policing rooted in professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.

The Commissioner has appointed SP Nasuru Isah as Commander of the unit. Its headquarters is based at the State Command Headquarters, with three operational sectors covering the Eastern, Central, and Northern axes. Personnel assigned to the unit have undergone rigorous screening, vetting, and training in intelligence-led operations, lawful use of force, and citizens’ rights protection—including proper firearms handling and range exercises.

CP Shaffa emphasised that unlawful stop-and-search, harassment, profiling, extortion, and other unprofessional conduct are strictly prohibited. A dedicated complaint hotline—08032861946—has also been established to ensure transparency and accountability.

“The Sokoto State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property through professional, humane, intelligence-driven, and accountable policing,” the statement read. The Command urged the public to support the police with timely and credible information.
