PDP not in  merger talks with any party – Ologunagba

Published

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is not in  merger or amalgamation talks with any  political party or interest.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary,Mr  Debo Ologunagba, disclosed this in a statement issued after the party’s NWC 587th meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Olugunagba said that while PDP was open to  all Nigerians ,including its former members who left for other parties, the party remained strong and formidable.

According to him, the party is capable of winning elections in a free, fair and transparent electoral process in Nigeria.

“The NWC acknowledges the influx of millions of Nigerians into our party in the on-going party membership drive in all the electoral wards across the country.

“This further confirms that the PDP remains the party of choice for majority of Nigerians.

“The public, teeming members of PDP and of course, the international community should therefore, disregard any report suggesting any form of merger between the PDP and any other political party, as such is not in the contemplation of our great party,” he said.(NAN)

Fake News Sponsors Apologize to Matawalle

Published

A political operative has issued a public apology to Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, confessing to orchestrating a smear campaign allegedly directed by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal Dare.

The confession, detailed in a statement by Ibrahim Muhammad Adam, alleges that the governor sponsored false reports to tarnish Matawalle’s reputation ahead of a potential gubernatorial bid.

In the statement, Adam admitted to being instructed by Governor Lawal to spread a fabricated story claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sacked Matawalle, along with Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru and Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu.

The false report was intended to go viral, with Lawal allegedly providing substantial funds, including payments to journalists, to lend credibility to the narrative.

“Governor Dauda claimed he had personally offered close to 500 million naira to someone in the presidency who allegedly confirmed that Honourable Matawalle would be removed,”

“The reason we included Badaru and the Minister of Power is because people might not think deeply — it was actually Dauda who sponsored the publication. The truth is, Dauda did it all because of Matawalle.

“We promised to bring Matawalle back as governor, and if we are to succeed, this is the way to expose Dauda.”Adam’s statement read.

He added that the governor’s actions were motivated by fears that Matawalle might challenge him for the Zamfara governorship in future elections.

Adam expressed regret for his role, stating, “I now realise how wrong this was, and I accept full responsibility.”

He urged the public and media to disregard the fabricated stories and pleaded for Matawalle’s forgiveness, citing “pressure and poor judgment” as factors in his actions.

Lawyers March for Return to Democratic Governance in Rivers State

Want US, International Community to Intervene Over Suspension of Gov Fubara

A group of lawyers, known as Lawyers in Defence of Democracy, has taken to the streets to demand the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.

The group is calling on the United States and the international community to pressure the Nigerian government to rescind its decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The lawyers, led by their Country Director, Barr. Uche Chukwu Udeh Sylvester argued that the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu is unconstitutional and undermines democracy.

They claim that the president’s action was taken without clear and present danger, and due process was not followed.

In a letter to President Donald Trump, they urged him to intervene and pressure the Nigerian government to restore democratic rule in Rivers State.

They argue that the suspension of Governor Fubara and the state assembly is a brazen attempt to undermine constitutional order.

The lawyers also condemn the National Assembly for ratifying the president’s decision, describing it as an assault on democracy.

They demand that President Tinubu reconsider his stand and allow Governor Fubara to continue his work as democratically elected governor of the state.

“In an era where democracy is supposed to reign supreme giving democracy dividends to the masses, we have found ourselves at a crossroads, a sober moment of reckoning where constitutional order is being tested most brazenly,” the letter said.

“The president, who swore to uphold the Constitution, has taken a most unprecedented and unlawful step with the suspension of a democratically elected governor, deputy governor and an entire state House of Assembly under the guise of Emergency Rule. What emergency? Nigerians and Rivers people did not see or feel any such emergency.

“In our law books and we stand by this, no constitutional provision, statute or any known convention gives the president the powers to single-handedly dissolve the structures of an elected state government.

“This could only have happened during the days of military juntas, but we are not under the firm grip of a military dictatorship. At the moment, the country is being governed under a constitutional democracy that operates a presidential system of government.

“President Bola Tinubu should not have taken the decision because democracy is a learning process, and the judiciary has demonstrated the capability to resolve issues.

“The president should have allowed the various state organs to resolve the issues. It is not worthy that until recently, there was a crisis of local government administration in Osun State, which has not led to a declaration of a state of emergency.”
