Professor Muktari Umar Bunza, Vice‑Chancellor of Northwest University, Sokoto, has described the library as the compendium of knowledge and insisted that no institution can outgrow the reach of its library.

Speaking during a visit by the Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), Prof Bunza warned that a shortage of professional librarians is undermining many Nigerian schools. “Scarcity of professional librarians is a significant issue, not only in the North‑West geopolitical zone but across the country,” he said.

The erudite scholar advised prospective students to prioritise employability when choosing courses. “Do not choose a course for its name or appeal alone; consider job prospects after graduation. Library and Information Science graduates often find employment readily available,” he added.

Prof Bunza also reflected on the origins of Northwest University, attributing its establishment to the founder, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, whose commitment to higher education was driven by a belief that advanced learning not only enriches citizens with knowledge but also forges lasting, quality relationships across society.

Now three years old, Northwest University operates five faculties and offers 17 programmes. Prof Bunza confirmed that the Library and Information Science programme is scheduled for accreditation.

The visit formed part of a resource verification exercise by the LRCN following accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Professor Ambassador Jafaru Wase, CEO of the LRCN, praised the university’s progress and commended the Vice‑Chancellor’s investments in education. “Investing in education is worthwhile,” Prof Wase said.
