… Vows to reclaim power in 2027
… Tambuwal attacks Tinubu, says performance is poor
In a bid to regroup following a wave of defections, the North West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened in Kaduna on Saturday, determined to strategise for the 2027 elections.
The meeting comes in the wake of significant departures from the party, particularly among lawmakers from Southern Kaduna, who have shifted their allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal addressed the gathering, criticizing the APC’s performance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He asserted that no politician with a conscience would align with the ruling party, citing its inadequate response to the pressing economic challenges facing Nigerians.
Tambuwal dismissed the recent defections as self-serving, stating, “People leave parties for different reasons, but what I have observed is that defections are not based on the interests of the people but on personal gains, what I call ‘stomach infrastructure.’” He urged politicians to prioritize public service over personal benefits, emphasizing the need for unity among opposition forces to challenge the APC in 2027.
The PDP Northwest reaffirmed its commitment to reclaiming national leadership, with a communiqué issued at the meeting underscoring the importance of resolving internal conflicts swiftly. “The PDP of the Northwest zone should take its rightful position in the nation by providing quality leadership,” read the statement, highlighting the necessity of unity and strategic mobilization.
Despite the challenges faced in the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, PDP leaders expressed confidence in the party’s grassroots support and the growing national shift towards the PDP. Key figures in attendance included former Kaduna Governor Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Kano Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, and other prominent party members.
The meeting concluded with a call for all party members to unite and collaborate in order to secure victory in the upcoming elections, reinforcing the PDP’s ambition to regain its place in Nigeria’s political landscape by 2027.
