NYSC journey turns risky as gunmen abduct Corps members

The abduction of prospective National Youth Service Corps members travelling to orientation camps has heightened concerns over the safety of young Nigerians undertaking the compulsory national service.

Gunmen attacked two buses carrying prospective corps members and other passengers along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, on Thursday.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in the South-East and South-South when the attackers struck at about 6:30am.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed that NYSC members were among those abducted.

However, the command said the exact number of people taken away was still being verified, while 10 victims had been rescued following a coordinated operation by security agencies.

The incident has thrown families into panic, turning what should have been an exciting beginning to the service year into a period of anxiety and uncertainty.

For many graduates, the NYSC journey starts with receiving their deployment letters, packing their belongings and making arrangements to travel hundreds of kilometres to unfamiliar states.

But for those travelling by road, the journey to camp is increasingly becoming a major security concern.

The police said tactical teams and other security agencies were conducting search-and-rescue operations to locate the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Bosso, alongside other security commanders, visited the scene to assess the situation and direct the rescue operation.

The police said, “The rescued victims are in safe hands and are being attended to.” It added that efforts were continuing to recover the remaining victims.

The affected section of the expressway was subsequently reopened, with security personnel deployed to protect commuters, according to the police.

The command also said it was working with the NYSC directorate to contact families of the affected corps members and keep them informed about developments.

The latest incident has revived questions about the safety arrangements for prospective corps members before they reach their orientation camps.

NYSC was established to promote national unity by deploying young graduates outside their home states to live and work among Nigerians from different backgrounds.

But the journey to fulfil that objective can itself expose corps members to security risks.

The challenge is particularly significant for graduates travelling long distances by road, where they may have little knowledge of the routes, security situation or safe locations along their journey.

The NYSC has previously advised prospective corps members to avoid night journeys and use designated motor parks, while its official platform currently provides a 24-hour Distress Call Centre on short code 6972.

The scheme also provides channels through which corps members can seek redress or relocation through their employers, State Coordinators and, where necessary, the Director-General.

However, the Imo incident raises a different question: what protection is available to a graduate who has not yet arrived at camp but is already facing serious security risks on the road?

For families, the issue goes beyond deployment.

It is about whether their sons and daughters can leave home, travel to another part of Nigeria and arrive safely to begin a year intended to promote national integration.

The tragedy has therefore placed renewed focus on the security dimension of national service.

For the young graduates preparing to wear the khaki, NYSC is supposed to mark the beginning of a new chapter.

For their parents, however, the first milestone may now be much simpler — receiving the phone call that says: “I have arrived safely.”
