The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has given large taxpayers until 31 July to fully adopt the national e-invoicing and Electronic Fiscal System (EFS), warning that defaulters will face regulatory enforcement.
Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to NRS Chairman Dr Zacch Adedeji, announced the deadline in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, saying it follows a public notice issued on 17 February regarding the implementation timeline and mandatory adoption of the Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS).
The Chairman personally signed that notice, which urged affected companies to complete onboarding, integration, testing and active invoice transmission to the NRS platform without further delay.
“The NRS has already commenced compliance monitoring activities to assess adherence to the e-invoicing mandate among large taxpayers,” Adekanmbi stated. “Any defaulting member may be subjected to appropriate regulatory and enforcement actions in accordance with relevant tax laws and regulations.”
He advised taxpayers to urgently conclude all outstanding integration activities and begin transmitting invoices before the compliance cut‑off.
Large taxpayers are defined as companies with gross annual turnover of N5 billion and above. According to the NRS, more than 1,000 firms had already complied by the first quarter of this year.
Full compliance encompasses completion of onboarding onto the MBS, successful system integration through approved Access Point Providers or Systems Integrators, completion of all validation and testing protocols, and the active transmission of invoices to the NRS e‑invoicing platform in line with approved standards.
Taxpayers were also reminded to ensure they receive only compliant e‑invoices bearing a valid Invoice Reference Number (IRN) from their suppliers.
The NRS expressed appreciation for the cooperation of taxpayers thus far and reaffirmed its commitment to providing the necessary support for a smooth implementation of the national e‑invoicing regime.
