NRC to increase train trips in 2024 — MD

Published

on

The Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, has said that the corporation will begin six train trips daily on the Standard Gauge Train across board in 2024.

Okhiria made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on Monday.

He said that train was meant to be operating 24 hours, but the present situation in the country had reduced the turnaround time.

“We are going to increase number of train trips to six on Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe and Abuja-Kaduna, which means the trips will be three times to and three times fro, making six trips in a day.

“The trips will commence before the second quarter of 2024. Right now, they are running four trips — two up and two down across board.

” What is limiting us is the night operations, and that is not the way train should operate. Train is meant to operate at all times. People may like to travel in the evening, but because of the security situation in to the country, we limit ourselves to day time.

“We intend to bring back passenger and freight train from Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano and Kaduna because of the dry ports,” Okhiria said.

He said the NRC had vandalism issue at Warri-Itakpe area in 2023, which was fixed two weeks after the incident took place.

The NRC boss said that it would be difficult for the train tracks to be vandalised when it was occupied.

He said that price of commodities would reduce drastically with the freight train operating across the country.

He said that NRC had employed junior staff from levels four and six, and was awaiting government approval before placing them.

The NRC boss said that they employed the junior staff to enhance their operations.

The senator, who represents Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio made an inappropriate request for her to spend “special moments” at his residence.

Natasha Akpoti, made the claim during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Friday.

Her comments follow a recent confrontation with Akpabio over a seating arrangement dispute in the Senate, which led to her being referred to the chamber’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

The controversy began last week when Akpoti-Uduaghan challenged the Senate President over the relocation of her seat in the chamber.

The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, prompting Akpabio to call on Senate security to remove her. Intervention from fellow lawmakers prevented the situation from deteriorating further.

Speaking on Arise TV, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed her dispute with Akpabio dates back to December 2023 when she and her husband visited Akwa Ibom to celebrate the Senate President’s birthday.

She recounted: “Akpabio was showing me around his house and was holding my hands, with my husband following behind us, when he said he wants me to come and be spending special moments in his house.”

She further revealed that her husband overheard the remark and later advised her not to travel abroad alone or be in the company of the Senate President unaccompanied.

In response to the seating dispute, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behaviour, stating that the Senate is “not for entertainment.”

Tariff increase will guarantee quality telecom services – Minister

Published

on

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has said the 50 per cent tariff increase for telecom companies will guarantee meaningful access to telecoms services for Nigerians.

The minister said this while briefing State House Correspondents on Thursday.

The minister had led Mr Sunil Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Airtel and other members of the executive of the company, to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tijani said the decision to increase telecoms tariff was difficult.

He, however, said that it was the responsibility of the government to look out for the interest of citizens, individuals and businesses.

“We have to ensure that when they invest, we can keep them afloat.

” This is a sector that employs close to half a million people in this country, including the value chain.

“Also, it was quite a difficult decision, balancing the need to allow these businesses to be sustainable, to stay afloat, but at the same time ensuring that each and every citizen can have access to telecommunication services,” said Tijani.

He stated that the Federal Government engaged KPMG to conduct a study to determine the optimal tariff allowance which led to the 50 per cent increase.

“If we chose not to allow the increase in tariff, we also were at risk of losing jobs, and some of the companies packing up.

“When you weigh that, it’s also not the best thing for the economy.

” The priority for this government is actually meaningful access.

“We don’t want our people to just have access to telecommunication services.

” We want it to be meaningful; the quality that you get is extremely important,” the minister said.

He said the Federal Government had invested in 90,000 kilometres of fiber to ensure the entire country was covered.

The minister added that the Federal Executive Council had also approved investment in additional 7,000 telecoms towers in rural areas.

He said quality access and connectivity required significant investment.

The minister added that the Federal Government must encourage the private sector to continue to make such investment.

Mittal, on his part, said Nigeria was the soul of Barthi Airtel’s operations in Africa, with the potential to match India’s advancements in digital innovation, connectivity and financial inclusion.

He said Airtel’s success in Nigeria was crucial to its overall success in Africa.

Mittal said Nigeria’s strategic importance underscored Airtel’s objective of driving growth and transformation across the African continent.

“Nigeria is the most important part of our Africa strategy.

” In fact, the entire Africa rests on the back of Nigeria for Airtel,” he said. (NAN)
