The Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA-FCT) has appealed to the Federal Government to honour the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached with medical doctors in July.
Dr Emeka Ayogu, Chairman of NMA-FCT, made the appeal at a news conference on Monday, held as part of activities lined up for the chapter’s 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme and sub-theme for the 2025 AGM are “Artificial Intelligence and its Revolution in Medicine: Friend or Foe?” and “Healthcare Funding: Impact on the Nigerian Healthcare System.”

Ayogu emphasised the importance of the Federal Government meeting the legitimate demands of medical professionals by honouring the MoU agreed upon during a series of meetings.

“If the government honours the MoU, it will enhance the welfare of doctors and help stem the tide of mass migration of medical professionals to developed countries in search of better opportunities,” he said.

He noted that the NMA had consistently engaged in national discussions and meetings, advocating for improved welfare for its members and a better working environment for healthcare providers.

Ayogu also highlighted the chapter’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, including supporting the families of deceased colleagues and providing community medical outreach services to vulnerable and underserved populations in the FCT.

On infrastructure development, he reported significant progress on the NMA-FCT’s 18-hectare Hippocratean Court Estate in Mamusa North.

“Completed works include the perimeter fencing with capping, a gatehouse, and a security post.

“We have also completed land surveys, demarcation, and issued allocation papers and survey plans to subscribers.

“I respectfully request the support of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) in constructing an access road to the estate,” he said.

Ayogu explained that building the access road would allow members, who had fulfilled all obligations, including payment for the Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) and ground rent, to begin construction on their plots.

He described the land acquisition and other recent accomplishments as a testament to the leadership’s commitment to the association’s growth and development.

He also appreciated members of his executive and various committees for their collaborative efforts and dedication.

“I appreciate all NMA-FCT members for their unrelenting support and applaud the various committees for their contributions to elevating NMA-FCT’s profile and service delivery.

“As part of the AGM activities, an interactive session was held between elders of the medical profession and young and intermediate doctors.

“The event featured a panel discussion titled “Financial Predicament of the Average Nigerian Medical Doctor: Any Way Out?,” he added. (NAN)
