The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a nationwide strike starting on June 3rd, 2024. The strike is in response to the tripartite committee’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage and the increase in electricity tariff.

“We are left with no choice but to commence an indefinite nationwide strike,” said Festus Osifo, President of the TUC.

The labour leaders have been pushing for a new minimum wage and the reversal of the electricity tariff hike. The negotiations have been ongoing, but no resolution has been reached, leading to the decision to go on strike.

The cost of living in Nigeria has been rising, and the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira have further exacerbated the situation. The labour leaders have been exploring various measures to mitigate the impact of these changes.

The government had established a committee to negotiate a new minimum wage, but they have been unable to reach a consensus. The Federal Government has not yet responded to the latest developments.
