Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued an urgent call to the Federal Government, demanding an end to routine condolences and the immediate adoption of decisive action to address Nigeria’s escalating security crisis.

Expressing profound concern over the relentless wave of violence that has claimed countless lives, displaced thousands, and ravaged communities across the nation, Atiku questioned the government’s continued reliance on official statements in the face of mounting casualties. The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) insisted that the current security situation be formally declared a national emergency.

“The recurring killings across different parts of Nigeria demand urgent and decisive action from the authorities rather than routine official statements after every tragedy,” Atiku stated. “These killings have become frighteningly recurrent, and a government that cannot protect its citizens must not become comfortable issuing statements after every massacre.”

The former Vice President’s remarks came in response to the recent massacre of at least 32 individuals in Angushi village, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State—an attack he described as “another painful reminder” of the nation’s deteriorating security landscape.

Expressing devastation at the loss of life, Atiku extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and the people of Sokoto State, while offering prayers for the departed.

“I am devastated by the killing of 32 innocent Nigerians in Ungushi community, Kebbe LGA of Sokoto State. My heart goes out to the bereaved families and the people of Sokoto State,” he said. “May Allah forgive the departed and give their loved ones the strength to endure this unbearable loss.”

Atiku challenged the government’s response strategy, asking pointedly: “Condolences are no longer enough. How many more Nigerians must be slaughtered before this government treats the protection of human life as an emergency?”

The former Vice President urged the Federal Government to implement robust security measures, including enhanced intelligence-gathering capabilities, fortified protection for vulnerable communities, and the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks.

“The Federal Government must move from condolences to action: strengthen intelligence, secure vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Atiku insisted. “The first duty of government is to protect life. Nigerians cannot continue to bury their loved ones while those entrusted with their security offer excuses.”
