On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu urged the newly appointed service chiefs to demonstrate innovation and courage in addressing terrorism and emerging security challenges across Nigeria.

During a decoration ceremony at the State House in Abuja, the president emphasized the importance of approaching their roles with utmost patriotism and dedication. He noted that the occasion represented more than just a formal ceremony; it was a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to ensuring peace and security for all citizens.

“This event transcends mere decoration; it marks the commencement of our renewed commitment to safeguarding the peace and security of every Nigerian,” he stated.

Acknowledging the sacrifices made by the armed forces in defending the nation’s territorial integrity, President Tinubu highlighted that many officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country. “In challenging times, when terrorists and armed marauders seized significant areas of our land, our valiant armed forces rose to the occasion and reclaimed those territories,” he remarked.

The president commended the military for restoring peace to previously troubled regions and for successfully rescuing kidnapped individuals, asserting that their efforts have significantly diminished the power of terror groups.

However, he cautioned that security threats are evolving, with new armed groups emerging in parts of the North-Central, North-West, and South. “We must not permit these new threats to take root. We must act decisively and proactively. Let us confront these new dangers head-on,” Mr. Tinubu urged.

He encouraged the service chiefs to utilise technology and new strategies to stay ahead of those who threaten national peace and stability. “I urge you to be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous. Nigerians expect results, not excuses,” he added.

Mr. Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing the armed forces with the necessary resources to effectively fulfil their mandate. “I wish you success as you embrace this challenge. I promise to offer all the support you require to accomplish your tasks,” he assured.

The president also prayed for the continued safety of the nation’s armed forces and for peace throughout the country.

Responding on behalf of the service chiefs, Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, assured the president and the Nigerian public of their commitment to effectively tackling the nation’s security threats. “I want to assure Mr President and all Nigerians that we will do everything in our power to eradicate all forms of criminality and make Nigeria a safer place for socio-economic activities to flourish,” he stated.

Other service chiefs present included Chief of Army Staff Waheedi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff Kennedy Aneke, and Chief of Naval Staff Idi Abbas. The ceremony was attended by the spouses of the service chiefs, who witnessed their partners taking the oath of allegiance and office before the president.
