Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to championing Africa’s digital interests on the global stage following the successful conclusion of the 26th African Telecommunications Union Conference of Plenipotentiaries (ATU-CPL-26) in Abuja.

The seven-day gathering, which drew delegates from across the continent, served as a critical preparatory platform for Africa’s engagement at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, scheduled for November.

Dr Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), commended stakeholders for their contributions to the conference’s success, describing the event as a watershed moment for strengthening Africa’s digital cooperation agenda.

In a statement issued on Monday, Maida singled out the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for his stewardship, noting that the ministry’s dedication ensured Nigeria provided an enabling environment for productive continental dialogue.

Throughout the proceedings, delegates exchanged ideas, deliberated on divergent perspectives, and forged consensus on pressing telecommunications challenges confronting the region, according to the NCC chief. The conference reaffirmed member states’ shared resolve to advance Africa’s digital transformation through enhanced regional collaboration.

Beyond formal plenary sessions, Maida observed that regulatory interactions yielded invaluable insights into sector opportunities and obstacles, reinforcing the imperative for sustained partnership.

“As we look ahead to the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, Nigeria remains committed to being a strong, constructive, and reliable voice for Africa on the global stage,” Maida stated.

He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s bid for re-election to the ITU Council, reiterating the nation’s dedication to advancing the continent’s collective interests within the global telecommunications community.

The NCC boss also extended congratulations to Engr Kezias Kazuba Mwale of Zambia on his election as Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union for the 2027–2031 term, wishing him success in his new capacity.

Maida paid tribute to the outgoing Secretary-General, Mr John Omo, lauding his eight-year tenure as impactful and distinguished by resolute leadership. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to deepening regional cooperation and driving telecommunications development across Africa.
