Senator Ogoshi Onawo, representing Nasarawa South, has formally defected from the African Democratic Congress to the Allied Peoples Movement, citing deep-seated internal challenges within his former political platform.

His resignation letter, effective June 15, was read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau. In the correspondence, the lawmaker explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with constituents and political associates, driven by “prevailing circumstances” that had rendered the ADC untenable.

Specifically, Onawo highlighted structural deficiencies and ongoing legal battles within the ADC, arguing that the party no longer provided the cohesion or enabling environment necessary for effective representation. He confirmed his formal enrolment in the APM to continue pursuing his legislative mandate, thanking supporters for their trust.

Reacting to the development, Senator Aminu Tambuwal (ADC-Sokoto) acknowledged his colleague’s constitutional right to freedom of association, asserting that democracy inherently guarantees such liberties for both citizens and public officeholders. He wished Onawo well in his new political venture.

However, Deputy Senate President Barau described the defection as “ironic”, noting that the ADC had projected itself as a formidable opposition force but was already suffering significant departures before consolidating its structure. The remark prompted an immediate objection from Senator Tambuwal, who urged Barau to maintain non-partisanship while presiding.

In response, Barau accepted the advice but maintained that offering procedural guidance during plenary fell within his remit as the presiding officer, insisting that his observation did not compromise the impartiality of the chair.
