The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has begun a sweeping enforcement operation to rid the market of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small PET bottles, in line with the Federal Government’s prohibition.
The agency confirmed on Wednesday that its enforcement teams are conducting coordinated raids across all six geopolitical zones, targeting markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars, and other distribution channels. The operation follows the closure of manufacturing facilities found to be in violation of the ban.
The government’s directive prohibits the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of alcohol packaged in sachets or PET containers under 200 millilitres—a measure introduced to curb underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption, and substance abuse, particularly among young people.
In a statement shared via its official X account, NAFDAC warned that continued possession or sale of the banned products constitutes a legal offence, attracting seizure of goods, regulatory sanctions, and possible prosecution.
Manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and transporters have been urged to immediately surrender any remaining stock to the agency.
The agency appealed to the public to support the enforcement drive by avoiding the purchase of banned beverages and reporting anyone involved in their production, distribution, or sale. Reports can be directed to the nearest NAFDAC office or via its dedicated hotline.
