Jorge Messi, father of Lionel Messi, Argentina football star, has died at the age of 68 after battling illness.
Jorge passed away in the early hours of Saturday at Sanatorio Centro, a hospital in his native Rosario, Argentina, according to the news outlet Infobae.
The hospital confirmed the death in a statement signed by its medical director Carlos Mackey. It said Jorge died at 2:00 a.m. local time.
Jorge had been suffering from a long-term illness and was absent at the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
“Sanatorio Centro, through its Medical Director, regrets to inform you of the passing of patient Jorge Messi, 68 years of age, which occurred today at 2:00 a.m,” the statement reads.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. In compliance with current regulations regarding patient data protection, and out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details will be provided regarding the medical circumstances of his death.”
Newell’s Old Boys, Lionel’s boyhood club, also posted its condolences to the family on the death of Jorge.
It described Jorge as a pillar behind the success of Lionel, whom it referred to as the “greatest player of all time”.
The club praised Jorge’s constant companionship and leadership that shaped Lionel, and consoled the family on his demise.
“Jorge was the pillar and the person who supported with vision, rigour, and affection the career of the greatest player of all time alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini,” it added.
“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory.
“Thank you for teaching him to love these colours. The Board of Directors, members, athletes, and the entire leprosa family embrace with affection Celia, Lionel, Rodrigo, Matías, and María Sol, and all their loved ones and close ones in this difficult moment.
“Farewell forever, leproso.”
Jorge took Lionel to FC Barcelona in Spain from the Newell’s Old Boys academy to receive the necessary growth treatment that aided his football career.
He famously signed Lionel’s first Barcelona contract on a napkin with Carles Rexach, then the club’s sporting director, on December 14 at the turn of the millennium.
