The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community, Igwe Christopher Nyia, following allegations of gross misconduct that have plunged the community into crisis.

Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Charles Egumgbe, announced the suspension in a statement on Wednesday, confirming that the suspension letter was personally delivered to the monarch on July 28, acting on a direct directive from Governor Peter Mbah .

The decision comes barely two weeks after the ministry suspended three traditional rulers and four president-generals from communities in Ezeagu council area over security-related infractions .

According to the government, the suspension is necessary “in the interest of peace, order and good governance” for the embattled Obeagu Ugwuaji community, which has been engulfed in turmoil following allegations levelled against the traditional ruler by community members .

Government Establishes Panel of Inquiry

In a decisive move to restore order, the state government has constituted an administrative panel of inquiry to investigate the remote causes of the communal clash. The panel is tasked with determining the traditional ruler’s role in the breakdown of law and order, as well as identifying other individuals involved in the crisis .

The government has given the panel a two-week ultimatum to submit its findings, signalling the administration’s resolve to address the security breach decisively .

Pattern of Crackdown

The suspension of Igwe Nyia reflects a broader crackdown by Governor Mbah’s administration on traditional institutions implicated in communal unrest. On July 15, the government suspended three traditional rulers and four president-generals from Ezeagu council area for misconduct linked to security infractions, underscoring the government’s zero-tolerance stance on chieftaincy-related crises .
