The federal government has secured 150 convictions from 160 terrorism cases on the opening day of a mass trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, marking a significant crackdown on insurgency.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, disclosed the outcome on Tuesday while addressing journalists in the capital. The proceedings, which involve over 600 suspects facing terrorism-related charges, are expected to run through Thursday.

“About 160 trials were conducted yesterday. Nearly 150 convictions were secured,” Mr Fagbemi stated. “The exercise is still ongoing. Today, approximately 300 cases have been handled, with another 84 expected. Wherever the process stops today, it will continue tomorrow and also on Thursday.”

The trial, traditionally held at the Kainji facility in Niger State, has been relocated to the Federal High Court in Abuja for this phase.

Mr Fagbemi, who briefed the press alongside other officials, reiterated the government’s resolve to eradicate terrorism and associated activities from Nigeria. “We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that Nigeria becomes a safe haven for everybody,” he declared on Monday ahead of the proceedings.

The mass trial underscores the administration’s intensified judicial response to insecurity, with the AGF appealing for public patience as the legal process unfolds. “I appeal for patience as we continue to carry out our lawful duty to the nation,” he added.

The exercise, which involves multiple court sessions and expedited hearings, reflects a coordinated effort by security agencies and the judiciary to expedite justice for terrorism-related offences. Further updates are expected as the trial continues through the week.
