Plea and bargain have been identified as the best approaches to addressing conflict in the society.

The Nasarawa commissioner for Justice and Attorney general of the state, Barrister Shuaibu Labaran Magaji, stated this during a public lecture organized by the faculty of Law, Nasarawa state University, Keffi,On Tuesday.

Dwelling on the theme of the public lecture, “Plea Bargaining and Sentencing Guidelines in the context of Restorative Justice: The US Experience,” Nasarawa state commissioner for justice and Attorney general, Barrister Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, described the event as opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas with experts from a renowned institutions such as the University of California as truly invaluable and applauded the faculty of law for the initiative.

According to Magaji, restorative justice offers a paradigm shift in settling conflicts, emphasized healing and reconciliation, which focused on the needs for all parties involved, the victims, the offenders, and the community at large, and maintained that Plea bargaining and sentencing guidelines play pivotal roles in shaping the outcomes of criminal cases and influencing the lives of those involved.

The Vice Chancellor of the Institution, professor Sa’ada Hassan Liman, stressed the importance of collaboration with foreign agencies, saying that the university under her care was committed to promoting academic excellence just as the dean, faculty of Law, Oluwatosin Okebukola, revealed that the faculty of law ranks among the best in the country produced yearly.

While interacting with students on the US legal system, opportunities and planning a career with the United nations agency, professor Jessical Vapnek, the director of international development, Law center, University of California, San Francisco, United States, stressed the importance of studying abroad, but said students must have all the requirements and better understanding of foreign legal system and cultures.

The event has the representatives of the Nasarawa state chief judge, the emir of Keffi, and the presiding Judge, court of appeal Makurdi Division, professor Maxwell Gidado among other legal practitionals both expressed confidence that after the public lecture people would adopt plea bargain Policy as means of resolving conflicts in the society.
