The chairman of LASUBEB, Hakeem Shittu, says Lagos’ quality education drive led to an increase in the number of candidates for the 2025/2026 placement test.

The annual test is conducted for Primary 6 pupils transitioning into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) in public secondary schools across Lagos State.

Mr Shittu said that at least 210,465 pupils sat the test on Saturday across 549 centres in public and private primary schools.

This marks an increase from the 204,413 pupils who sat for the 2024 edition of the placement test, he stated.

Mr Shittu said more private school pupils participated this year, describing the trend as a positive sign for public education in Lagos.

He noted growing parental confidence in the state’s public education system, citing the quality and impact of government initiatives.

“I noticed parents from private schools now want their children in public schools. That explains the rise in numbers,” Mr Shittu said.

He commended the State Examination Board for a smooth and well-coordinated exercise across all participating centres.

Mr Shittu added that the state’s “Leave No Child Behind” policy ensured inclusive access, especially for children in hard-to-reach areas.

“Some parents registered late. We still allowed them because the state remains committed to educational inclusivity,” he explained.

Mr Shittu also confirmed full compliance by pupils and supervisors, with enough materials available at all centres visited.

A parent, Ezekiel Adedayo, praised the early arrival of officials and improved test organisation this year.

He noted that the exercise was orderly and fair and assessed pupils through CAS and OMR, which he described as objective.

Mr Adedayo said parents were kept outside examination premises, adding that they were addressed respectfully and well-informed.

He added that the Lagos State government remains committed to providing quality, inclusive education for every child, regardless of location or background.
