The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by officers attached to the Satellite Town Division in Lagos, following a widely circulated video on social media.
Force spokesperson, CSP Aliyu Giwa, announced the probe in a post on his X handle (@aleeygiwa) on Saturday. He stated that police acted promptly after the video was posted on April 4 by an X user, Rhapstar, who accused officers of incivility.
“We saw the video, we acted, and here is where things stand,” Mr Giwa said.
He confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the implicated officers have been summoned. Statements have been obtained, and interviews conducted as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Preliminary findings suggest the incident occurred in May 2025. Authorities are now working to obtain accounts from the victims central to the investigation.
“This process is not a cover-up; it is a demonstration of accountability,” Mr Giwa added.
He reiterated that police leadership remains committed to upholding the rule of law in all operations nationwide. “No officer is above accountability, and no incident is too old to investigate,” he said.
The police spokesperson assured the public that the investigation is active, with further updates to follow. He acknowledged that public feedback had been instrumental in prompting the probe, stating: “To every Nigerian who spoke up, your voice prompted accountability, as it should be.”
In the original video, officers are seen stopping a vehicle, ordering the occupants out, and searching one individual away from the roadside-parked car. The footage has sparked widespread concern over alleged harassment during routine stop-and-search operations.
