A 400-level student of the Kwara State University (KWASU) has committed suicide over her poor grades.

Daily Trust reports that the incident, involving one Rashidat Shittu, happened over the weekend.

The 20-year-old student of Accounting was said to have taken a chemical substance that later claimed her life.

Sources familiar with the matter said she committed suicide ahead of her upcoming exam because she was having grade-related issues.

“When she started feeling pains, she informed her friends and hostel mates that she used the poisonous substance,” one student was quoted as saying.

It is understood that Shittu was rushed to the school clinic and later referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

The final-year student was, however, pronounced dead on arrival.

A staffer at UITH said the Shittu is suspected to have consumed a lethal insecticide that left her writhing in pain.

“Her colleagues said she was having issues with her academic status in school,” the medical staffer said.

“She later informed her colleagues while she was writhing in pain that she had drunk sniper.

“When they contacted her mother, she instructed them not to take her to the school clinic.

“But that was where she was rushed to at last when her situation got worse before she was referred to the UITH.”

The deceased, it is understood, has been buried at the Muslim cemetery in Osere, Ilorin.
