The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA), has thrown its weight behind the resignation of Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), describing the decision as courageous and people-centred.

The group acknowledged that while Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the platform it provided him since 2022, the party’s prolonged internal conflicts have significantly hampered its effectiveness and cohesion.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KPRA Coordinator, Isyaku Lawal Tofa, said the governor’s decision to quit the NNPP, effective January 25, 2026, was taken in the overall interest of Kano residents, amid what he described as deepening internal crises within the party.

He said: “The Governor has expressed his gratitude to the party for the opportunities it provided him since 2022, acknowledging the support and goodwill of its leadership and members throughout his political journey.

“However, it is imperative to recognize that the persistent internal disputes and legal challenges facing the NNPP have hindered its ability to serve the public effectively.

“In his resignation letter, Governor Yusuf articulated the challenges that have plagued the party, highlighting the detrimental impact of ongoing leadership disagreements and unresolved legal matters.

“These internal conflicts have not only weakened the party’s structure but have also fostered disenfranchisement among its members, leading to an environment of division and uncertainty. The Governor’s insight into these issues reflects a deep understanding of the political landscape and a genuine concern for the stability and progress of Kano State.

“The KPRA acknowledges the gravity of the situation within the NNPP and supports the Governor’s assertion that the internal crises have created irreconcilable divisions that threaten the party’s future. As the Governor stated, his decision to resign was made after careful reflection and is rooted in the best interests of the people of Kano State.

“It is a decision taken not out of bitterness, but from a place of good faith, with a steadfast commitment to fostering peace and unity within the state.”

The group further highlighted the political significance of the development, pointing out that 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen have also resigned from the NNPP in solidarity with the governor.

According to KPRA, the mass exit reflects a shared resolve to prioritise public service and effective governance over party allegiance in the face of internal party turmoil.

The alliance called on political stakeholders in Kano State to engage in constructive dialogue and focus on resolving issues that hinder good governance, rather than deepening partisan divisions.

He added, “In light of these developments, the KPRA calls upon all stakeholders within the political landscape of Kano State to reflect on the implications of these internal crises and to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at resolving the underlying issues.

“It is essential that the focus remains on the needs and aspirations of the people, rather than on partisan conflicts that serve only to undermine the collective progress of the state. We commend Governor Yusuf for his visionary leadership and his unwavering commitment to the development of Kano State.

“His achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment are testaments to his dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.

“The KPRA stands ready to support the Governor in his future endeavors, as he seeks to navigate this new chapter in his political journey. As we move forward, it is crucial for all political actors to prioritize unity and collaboration in the quest for sustainable development and social cohesion in Kano State.”

The group reaffirmed its readiness to support the governor in his future political journey and urged political actors to embrace unity and collaboration in pursuit of sustainable development and social cohesion in the state.

KPRA expressing solidarity with Governor Yusuf, describing his resignation as a necessary step toward building a more responsive and people-oriented political environment in Kano State.
