Kia Lake Academy came tops in the quiz competition organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Abuja, in commemoration of the 2023 International Human Rights Day (IHRD).
The second position went to Junior Secondary School Apo Legislative Quarters, while Junior Secondary School Area 11 clinched the third position in a contest that had seven Schools in participation.
The questions for the quiz were drawn from the National Human Rights Commission Act 2010 as amended, 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and also questions from the International and Regional Instruments on human rights.
Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Chairperson Governing Council of the NHRC, Dr. Salamatu Husseini Suleiman, FICMC stated that in fulfilment of its mandate to promote and protect human rights, the Commission organises quiz competition among Schools to deepen their knowledge and understanding about human rights.
This exercise is an annual event which is part of a series of activities leading to the commemoration of the IHRD on 10th December.
“IHRD avails the Commission the opportunity to sensitise and educate the students on issues of human rights, it also empowers them with the knowledge, skills and attitude prompting behaviours that uphold human rights” she added.
The Director Economic Social & Cultural Rights Department while handing out trophies to the winners said the quiz is meant to build expertise and instill consciousness about human rights in the minds of students while they are young.
The participants were treated with a choral presentation by School of the blind Jabi, Abuja.
