Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has reaffirmed the Judiciary’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and heinous crimes within the nation.

During her remarks at the event titled “Building the Capacity of the Nigerian Judicial Sector to Prosecute, Defend and Adjudicate Terrorism and Atrocity Cases” held in Abuja, she emphasised the Judiciary’s role in promoting justice, accountability, and national cohesion amidst the prevailing threats of terrorism.

Represented by Justice Mohammed Garba of the Supreme Court, Justice Kekere-Ekun noted that the initiative aims not only to enhance the rule of law but also to uphold the principles that constitute a fair and humane society.

“In recent years, our nation has been stricken by the devastating effects of terrorism and barbaric acts,” she stated. “These violent occurrences and extensive human rights violations not only claim lives but also jeopardise our national unity, erode public trust, and undermine the foundations of peace and order.”

The Chief Justice underscored that in these trying times, the judiciary must act as a sentinel of justice, a custodian of accountability, and a source of hope for victims and communities.

She articulated that the initiative is more than just a reaction to a national security challenge; it stands as a testament to a long-standing dedication to justice, equity, and human dignity.

Through the diligent prosecution of terrorism and atrocity-related cases, the judiciary not only safeguards lives and properties but also works to dismantle the pervasive climate of impunity that fuels such offences.

Justice Kekere-Ekun added, “By delivering fair, unbiased, and timely rulings, the judiciary communicates a clear message: justice will prevail, and no individual is above the law.”

She expressed gratitude to the United States government for its support of the initiative, highlighting it as a reaffirmation of the global community’s faith in Nigeria’s commitment to justice and security.

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, voiced concerns regarding the rising incidents of terrorism and atrocious crimes in the country. He noted the profound psychological effects of these acts and remarked on the immeasurable economic repercussions.

A significant highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, the US Embassy in Nigeria, and the Federal High Court.
