The family of the late former Lagos State Governor and Minister of Works and Housing, Alhaji Dr. Lateef Kayode Jakande, has expressed profound shock at the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London on July 13, 2025.
In a statement issued by Salihu Dantata Mahmud, a former bureau chief of Jakande’s newspaper in Abuja, the family described the news of Buhari’s death as a “rude shock.”
Mahmud conveyed the grief of Jakande’s widow and the entire family, noting the late president’s significant impact on Nigeria.
Hon. Deji Jakande, a former member of the House of Representatives and son of the late governor, extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This is a time for sober reflection,” Deji said, praying for Buhari’s soul to rest in Aljanna Firdaus and for strength to bear the loss.
The statement highlighted the political bond between Buhari and Jakande, who were both members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) as opposition progressives. Despite Jakande’s incarceration following Buhari’s military coup in 1983, the two leaders reconciled and maintained a cordial relationship.
Salihu emphasized their shared commitment to Nigeria’s progress, stating, “Jakande and Buhari are no more; we pray for their souls to rest in Aljanna Firdaus and for their shortcomings to be forgiven.”
The family also recalled Buhari’s legacy, particularly his War Against Indiscipline, which left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s public service culture.
As the nation mourns, the Jakande family joins in prayers for Buhari’s eternal rest and for unity in reflecting on his contributions to Nigeria’s development.[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammadu_Buhari)
