Troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have effectively repulsed a lethal attack by ISWAP terrorists in Damboa, Borno, resulting in the neutralisation of 21 insurgents and the recovery of a significant arsenal of arms and ammunition.
Captain Reuben Kovangiya, acting deputy director of army public relations at Headquarters Theatre Command, confirmed the details in a statement issued from Maiduguri on Friday.
The assault unfolded in the early hours of Friday, specifically targeting the soldiers of the 25 Task Force Brigade.
Engaged in a fierce and prolonged firefight exceeding two hours, the soldiers, aided by the Air Component of OPHK, confronted the terrorists.
Kovangiya remarked that the troops displayed exceptional bravery and tactical acumen, forcing the terrorists to retreat in disarray, with more than 21 of their number neutralised during the engagement.
“The valiant troops, supported by Close Air Support, held their ground and successfully repelled the attack despite the intensity of the enemy’s firepower. The insurgents incurred severe losses and were compelled to flee,” he stated.
The spokesman also noted that during the exchange of gunfire, an ammunition storage facility within the military base was affected by an explosion, but the situation was swiftly contained.
He confirmed that the troops experienced only minor casualties.
“Post-operation assessments revealed the recovery of multiple weapons and ammunition, including: two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), three Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tubes, one pump-action rifle, nine AK-47 rifles, three belts of PKT rounds, eight AK-47 magazines, seven RPG bombs, two boxes of 12.7mm x 99mm ammunition, one and a half boxes of PKT rounds, and 20 hand grenades,” Kovangiya reported.
The spokesman highlighted that the success of this operation underscores the efficacy of coordinated ground and air operations in counterterrorism efforts, reaffirming the Nigerian military’s determination to restore peace in the North-east.
“The courage and sacrifice exhibited by the troops are a source of national pride. Their unwavering commitment to eradicating insurgency and reinstating peace in the region is truly commendable,” he concluded.
