An intelligence official has warned that Israel must remain vigilant against a possible attack from Iran. Avi Melamed, a former Israeli intelligence operative and regional analyst, suggests that following the recent assassinations of key figures in Hezbollah and Hamas, Iran is likely to deploy its proxies, including Hezbollah, to retaliate against Israel.
Reports from Elanza News indicate that the region is currently in a state of heightened tension, as observers await confirmation of whether Hezbollah or Tehran will escalate the situation into a full-scale conflict.
Avi Melamed, who has extensive experience in Israeli intelligence and has served as an advisor on Arab affairs, emphasized the implications of the recent attacks. He noted, “Given the assassinations of Fuad Shukr, the second-in-command of Hezbollah, and Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas Politburo Chief, it is highly probable that Iran will utilize its proxies to target Israel in response to these incidents.”
Melamed further indicated that discussions between Iran and Hezbollah are likely underway, focusing on the potential scope of any retaliatory strikes. He pointed out that these operations would probably aim at significant Israeli military targets rather than civilian areas, employing advanced weaponry and tactics.
He elaborated, “Iran’s strategic calculations are influenced by the understanding that a direct attack on Israel could provoke a renewed response from the U.S.-led coalition, similar to the defensive measures taken against Iranian actions in April. Additionally, Israel’s recent strikes, including one on the military airfield in Natanz, demonstrate its capability to hit critical targets deep within Iranian territory. The Israeli counterattack on the Houthi-controlled port in Hodeida further illustrates its ability to inflict substantial damage beyond traditional geographic limits.”
Melamed concluded by highlighting the precarious position Iran finds itself in, needing to respond without provoking a broader escalation that could lead to a significant Israeli counteroffensive against its homeland.
