Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the U.S.-Iran ceasefire and the planned reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the move could help bring a lasting end to a conflict that has disrupted global oil supplies and driven up fuel prices.

“This is positive news. We’ve been calling for a de-escalation for some time,” Albanese told Sky News on Wednesday. “We’re already seeing a substantial impact of a war which is on the other side of the world, but is having an impact on Australians here.”

The prime minister added, “This is very positive, and we hope that it leads to a permanent de-escalation and an end to the conflict, and a resolution that allows the world to go forward.”

Australia recently halved fuel excise taxes temporarily and released petrol from emergency reserves amid rising energy prices.

The country is particularly vulnerable to global supply disruptions as it imports most of its fuel and maintains only relatively small strategic reserves.
