The Chairman, Inter Party Advisory Council IPAC, Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantelle said the proposed constitution guiding the activities of political parties will give some leverage to its functions and consolidate internal party democracy.
Dantelle who made the revelation on an NTA program, ‘Electoral Reform ‘ saying part of the constitutional amendment been proposed to the National Assembly is to create an enabling environment for political parties to thrive, as it was obtainable in the previous republic .
He said the constitution amendment in the Electoral Act with regards to the performance and activities of political parties will further strengthen our democratic culture to reduce vote buying, coercion, thuggery minimal judicial interference, the use of Police ,security agencies, and INEC interference among others, with expectations for Nigerians to express themselves freely without circumventing the rules .
IPAC as the umbrella body was operating with the code of conduct, but soon it will roll out a full fledged constitution to guide the activities of political parties and rules.
He bemoaned a situation were electorates are disfranchised both at the primary and secondary elections, for personal gains of the political class .
He appealed to stakeholders of the current electoral reforms which included the National Assembly, INEC among others to protect the interest of political parties, saying that the situation were by a party member is bigger political parties, because of sponsorship has weakend our democracy.
IPAC Chairman maintained that the proposed constitution amendment will galvanize the activities of political parties and it’s members in the conduct of the day to day running of political parties.
