The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 20 for by-elections across six states, to be held concurrently with the Ekiti State governorship poll.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced the date on Thursday in Abuja during the swearing-in of a new National Commissioner, retired Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa.

According to Professor Amupitan, the by-elections will fill senatorial vacancies in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Ondo states. Additionally, a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi and a House of Representatives seat in Kano will be contested.

“The Ekiti State Governorship Election is scheduled for June 20, 2026. On the same date, the Commission will conduct by-elections to fill vacant seats,” he said.

Speaking on the appointment of Rear Admiral Malafa, the INEC Chairman described her as a seasoned professional with a background in military service and electoral logistics. She has previously worked with the Commission in logistics and served as Director of Legal Services in the Nigerian Navy.

Professor Amupitan reiterated INEC’s commitment to its constitutional mandate of delivering credible elections.

In response, the newly sworn-in National Commissioner expressed gratitude for her reception and pledged her dedication to electoral stability. “I look forward to working with everyone for the development and stability of our country, and for the success of forthcoming elections,” she said. (NAN)
